R U OK? Day
Thursday 9 September 2021 marks R U OK? Day, a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone to regularly ask each other, “Are you OK?” and support those struggling with life’s ups and downs.
What another year it’s been and no doubt, the constant ups and downs of lockdowns and restrictions are taking their toll on our national wellbeing.
This R U OK? Day, more than ever, we need to acknowledge that It Ain’t Weak to Speak and ask how the people in your world are really going?
While R U OK? Day is a day where the question, “Are you OK?” will be asked a number of times, and there will be countless ‘I’m fine, I’m all good’ responses, let’s not rest on our laurels and stop the conversation here. We cannot heal what we do not reveal. When we’re struggling, we often feel that it should be obvious to those around us which isn’t necessarily the case (known as the illusion of transparency)… mind reading actually isn’t a thing. We encourage those reaching out to people they’re worried about, to dig a little deeper. We encourage those who are personally struggling to talk a little longer.
R U OK? Day is a national day of action which aims to prevent suicide by encouraging Australians to connect with someone they care about to help stop little problems from turning into big ones.
On this day we want everyone across the country from all backgrounds and walks of life to ask family, friends and colleagues: “Are you OK?“.
It’s so simple. In the time it takes to turn on the TV, to check your socials, to have a coffee you can start a conversation that could change a life.
