Meet the women of LIVIN – Tammi McDermott

With husband (and certified ‘Best Guy Ever’) Simon, and kids Lola and Sonny, Tammi has it made in beautiful Burleigh. She’s been a corporate and commercial lawyer for over 15 years, but from what we can see, she’s got a pretty good handle on the meaning of balance. “For me, that means being close to water or the sun and being away from the daily ‘noise’”.
Tammi knows as well as anyone it isn’t always so easy – she found her way to LIVIN in 2017 as a result of her own mental health issues in the form of post-natal depression. After her recovery, she was sparked with a passion to get involved with LIVIN, to be candid about her journey, and to encourage those who have experienced and overcome mental ill health to be open and transparent about their experiences – something she sought but struggled to find during her own period of depression.
Now an Advisory Board member, and providing legal counsel, she says being able to contribute to the LIVIN cause is an absolute privilege – we can assure you; the privilege is ours. We understand exactly why she’s in such high demand… but we hope the fam can give her that 10 minutes of peace and quiet even heroes need!
Tammi’s Mental Health Tip:
Take the time, every day, to do something that helps you to centre yourself. If that’s waking up at 5.30 am to write down the things to be grateful for before your children wake up, walking your dog, or sitting in the sun for ten minutes in your lunch break – make a conscious effort to do one thing every day that recharges you.
For me, that means being close to water or the sun and being away from the daily ‘noise’, leaving my phone behind and not being visible to my children, husband or dog (who always manage to find me otherwise!). As a professional and parent about to undertake a renovation, there is always something else that I could be doing. But for me, once I made the conscious shift to take back time for me in the morning, even if it is just for ten minutes – I found that I started the day balanced, rather than stressed.
