Women’s Health Week

Women’s Health Week is a week dedicated to all women across Australia to make good health a priority. Every September, for one week, Women’s Health Week is a reminder to set aside time for your health and well-being. Make an appointment with your doctor for a health check, get active, join an event or simply make an extra effort to connect with other people. Regardless of what it is, do something for yourself, because you deserve it.

DO ONE THING EVERYDAY FOR YOURSELF

This can be as simple as listening to a podcast for ten minutes a day that you are interested in, taking time to read a chapter in a new book, or doing a five-minute breathing exercise. Whatever it is, make sure that this one thing is all about you, a dedication to your own personal health and wellbeing.

Don’t think you have time? Instead of burning time and energy on things that don’t necessarily leave you feeling inspired, like mindlessly scrolling through your social media feed or hurriedly responding to work emails in the early or late hours of the night and day, do something that actually boosts your mood and leaves you feeling good. This is a commitment to you, no one else!

PUT SOME EFFORT INTO TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF

You deserve to feel fit and healthy. A healthy body makes for a healthier mind. This week, commit to a healthy sleep routine; commit to thirty minutes of exercise each day (that is, the exercise that you enjoy); commit to drinking more water and staying hydrated; commit to making healthier food choices, or cut down on your screen time. Don’t feel like you have to rearrange your whole life or make a wholesale change this Women’s Health Week, often it’s the small changes we make, the incremental change that is most sustainable.

LEARN HOW TO FORGIVE YOURSELF

If a friend, family member, or work colleague makes a mistake, nine times out of ten we will forgive them or provide them with compassion without a second thought. However, it can be a different story when it comes to forgiving ourselves. We all make mistakes at one point or another, this is a part of life, a part of being human. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Start treating yourself like a good friend, like someone you love and care for.

MIND YOUR LANGUAGE

Set yourself a challenge to observe your inner dialogue and try to limit the harsh things we can berate ourselves with at times (or all the time). The way we talk to ourselves bleeds into how we talk to others. Be kinder to yourself. When talking about your age, for example, don’t follow up with “OMG, I’m soooo old”. Love, nurture, and appreciate your body just the way it is, or at least be more accepting of the journey you are on to becoming a healthier version of yourself. Our bodies are the vessels we use to love, live and enjoy life. It’s a privilege to have one!

This Women’s Health Week, spend some time doing something that you enjoy and most importantly, be a good friend to yourself.
