I’m pumped to be sharing this episode with you today and introduce you to my extremely knowledgeable guest as we dive into the topic of nutrition, how it impacts our day to day lives, our physical wellbeing and importantly, our mental health.

My guest today is Simon Hill who, apart from being my personal friend, is a Physiotherapist and Nutritionist who has spent much of his career digging into the science to decipher how we can fuel our bodies to promote longevity, minimise stress and reduce the chances of disease.

Simon is passionate about making nutritional information simple and accessible. He is the plant based food contributor to Chris Hemsworth’s fitness app, Centr, owner of Eden, a plant based restaurant in Bondi and author of the book, The Proof is in the Plants.

In this episode, Simon discusses the direct connection between our gut health and our thoughts and how we can use good food and nutrition as a form of self love to build the foundation for a healthy happy life. We talk about the harmfulness of getting hooked on processed food, where he gets his protein from on a plant based diet, how physical exercise promotes resilience and mindfulness and so much more.

You might want to listen to this podcast over again because Simon certainly shares a tonne of information that is definitely worth absorbing.

TOPICS WE COVER AND WHERE TO FIND THEM:

[3.50]: Sam welcomes Simon onto the podcast. Simon is currently on a retreat helping to facilitate it. They both discuss their experiences with retreats in the past.

[6.30]: Simon talks about the focus of the retreat he is working on. How it functions to help people improve their situations and wellbeing. How physical exercise is used to promote resilience and mindfulness.

[9.20]: How can you implement these strategies in a sustainable way.The importance of making commitments to yourself and not just for other people.

[11.14]: Using good food and nutrition as a form of self love to build the foundation for a healthy happy life.

[14.30] What types of food are particularly harmful for our health and why we want them anyway.

[17.00] They discuss a study by Kevin Hall on ultra processed versus unprocessed foods that shows their negative effects even in the short term.

[23.00] How Simon keeps himself fit and strong while living on a plant based diet. Where does he get his protein from

[24.30]: There is no magical bullet to health, there is no ultimate diet plan for every person. There is only a set of guidelines that science lays out for us.

[27.45]: Simon highlights common misconceptions and misinformation that might hold us back or even be dangerous.

[29.35]: The difference (and similarities) between protein from meat and from vegetables. How you can get all the protein you need, exclusively from plants, without any trouble at all.

[34.00]: Where the misinformation comes from and how you can look critically at studies and other cited sources of information.

[42.00]: The connection between our digestive health and our mental wellbeing. What we can do to improve both.

[43:45] How we get hooked on processed food in the harmful cycle of instant gratification.

[47.30]: You will find new joy and love and enrichment from healthy eating that rivals or exceeds what you get from unhealthy eating.
