Tackling Mental Health Delays

4 Minutes Read | Posted in We asked our Psych | Posted during June 11, 2024

Insights from our LinkedIn poll, research findings, and possible reasons for the delay.

We recently ran a poll on LinkedIn asking about the average delay between the onset of mental illness symptoms and treatment for those who seek professional support. Here are the responses:

  • 0-12 months – 22%
  • 1-2 years – 30%
  • 2-5 years – 17%
  • 5+ years – 30%

Research shows significant delays between the onset of mental illness symptoms and seeking treatment. While severe conditions like psychosis prompt quicker support, common issues like depression and anxiety often face longer delays. We’re talking about persistent conditions that impact daily functioning, not just temporary low moods or stress. On average, it takes 8 years for someone to seek support, and still, about 55% of those with mental health issues receive no professional help.

* If interested in the aforementioned research, please hit us up and we’d be happy to provide you with some references.

We subsequently Asked Our Psych what the research tells us and possible reasons for the delay.

  1. Not Aware That Something Is Wrong: Many people don’t realise their symptoms are signs of mental illness, mistaking them for temporary stress or just part of their personality. “This is just the way I am and will always be”. It takes time and honest introspection to acknowledge you need support; that sometimes in life we can’t simply go it alone.
  2. Not Sure Where to Get Help: The mental health space can be confusing, and many people don’t know where to start when seeking support. For those needing guidance, resources like LIVIN’s Getting Help can be a helpful starting point.
  3. Misconceptions About Therapy and Psychologists: Myths like therapy being only for severe cases or involving invasive questioning can deter people. However, many find that therapy is less daunting than they initially thought. That said, be patient and persistent to find the right fit – you CAN shop around.
  4. Negative Career Implications: Fear of judgment or discrimination at work can prevent people from reaching out for professional support.
  5. Cost: The cost of mental health support can be a barrier. However, a mental health treatment plan from your GP can make accessing support much more affordable. Ask your GP directly about this option.
  6. Human Nature to Delay: It’s human nature to delay, delay, delay. It’s a bit like ignoring the warning light on the dashboard of your car or attending to that leaking pipe in your bathroom. However, avoidance only tends to make things worse, invariably leading to greater ‘damage’ and the need for more specialised help.

One major factor contributing to these delays is self-stigma.

Understanding Self-Stigma

Self-stigma is when a person with a mental health condition internalises negative stereotypes and feels ashamed or embarrassed about their own mental health issues. This can lead to low self-esteem and reluctance to seek help. For example:

  • Negative Self-Perception: A person with depression might think, “I’m weak because I can’t just snap out of it,” internalising the false belief that mental illness is a sign of personal failure.
  • Avoidance of Help: Someone with anxiety, for example, might avoid seeking therapy because they believe, “People will think I’m crazy if they find out,” internalising societal stigma that seeking mental health support is something to be ashamed of.

Strategies to Overcome Self-Stigma

While self-stigma is a complex issue, here are some practical steps to combat it:

  1. Recognise Stigma: Acknowledge that stigma exists and understand its impact on your thoughts and actions.
  2. Develop Stigma Resistance: Building coping strategies, resilience, and self-compassion can shield us from stigma’s effects.
  3. Share Your Story: Sharing personal experiences can be empowering and often leads to a warm reception, turning personal challenges into meaningful contributions.
  4. Prepare for Detractors: Not everyone will understand or support your journey. Remember, “haters are gonna hate.” Focus on the positive and supportive reactions you receive.
