SLOW: A Vital Mnemonic for Supporting Those at Risk of Suicide

When it comes to supporting someone who may be at risk of suicide, knowing how to respond can be life-changing. The SLOW mnemonic is a straightforward guide to help you navigate these critical conversations and actions. Here’s how to use it effectively.

S – SUICIDE: Ask Clearly and Directly

The first step is to address the issue head-on. If you suspect someone is contemplating suicide, don’t shy away from asking the tough question: “Are you thinking about suicide?” It’s a common misconception that asking about suicide may encourage someone to act on those thoughts. In reality, your directness can provide relief and open up a vital dialogue.

If they answer yes, it can be a good idea to gather more information. Having a few follow-up questions can also prevent that deer-in-the-headlights moment you may experience if someone expresses they want to kill themself. Ask about their plan: the time, place, and method they’re considering. This information is essential for assessing the level of risk and can guide the next steps in getting them help. It’s particularly useful information to provide to a professional who will eventually be involved.

This approach not only helps you understand the immediacy of the situation but also demonstrates to the person that you’re taking their feelings seriously and are prepared to help. Remember, your role is to be a supportive bridge to professional help, not to solve the problem on your own.

L – LISTEN: Listen Without Judgement

Once you’ve opened the conversation, your next role is to listen. This means being fully present and giving them the space to express their feelings without fear of judgement. Avoid interrupting or offering unsolicited advice. Instead, show empathy and understanding. Your willingness to listen can help them feel less isolated and more supported during a difficult time.

O – OPTIONS: Encourage Awareness of Help

After listening, it’s important to gently introduce the idea that help is available. The goal here is not to push for immediate action, but to plant seeds of hope and awareness. Here’s how you can approach this:

  • Gently mention that professional support exists, such as mental health professionals accessible through their GP or potentially through an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) if they’re employed.
  • Discuss options softly, without pressure. The aim is to open their mind to possibilities, not to force immediate decisions.
  • Let them know that when they’re ready, you’d be willing to help them make an appointment or even accompany them. This isn’t about immediate action, but about showing support for future steps.
  • Share information about crisis hotlines or local mental health services. Having this knowledge, even if not used immediately, can be a lifeline later.
  • Don’t keep it a secret. While respecting their privacy is important, if someone is at risk, it’s crucial to involve others who can help. Keeping their struggles hidden can lead to further isolation and danger.

The key message to communicate is that they don’t have to face their struggles alone. Help exists, and there are people who want to support them. By introducing these ideas gently, you’re laying groundwork for future action while providing immediate comfort and hope.

W – WALK: Walk with Them or Wait Until Support Arrives

The final step is about ensuring their immediate safety. If possible, walk with them to get the help they need. If professional support isn’t readily available, stay with them until help arrives.

If the situation is urgent, don’t hesitate to call emergency services. It’s crucial not to leave someone who is at risk of suicide alone. Your presence can be a critical lifeline during this time.
